                OCTOBER 14, 2015

Present:  Council on Aging Members Irving Goldberg, Jack Jordan, Jean Noussee, Virginia McIntyre, Ernest Cornelssen, Marijo Gorney, Council on Aging Director Lynne Waterman.

Absent:  Norah McCormick, Mary Gaffney, Outreach Coordinator Darlene Perkins

Chairman Irving Goldberg opened the meeting at 8:35 a.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES – September 9, 2015

Motion: Jack Jordan moved to approve the minutes of September 9, 2015, seconded by Jean Noussee.   Vote unanimous 5-0

COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Lynne Waterman, Director, distributed her report for the month of September.
She reported on the programs and stated she and the Principal Clerk met with the AARP tax program’s new Mashpee volunteer coordinator and his assistant regarding the upcoming season beginning in February 2016.  She met with the Activity Coordinator and the Mashpee Animal Control Officer to plan a future program.  The Director and Activity Coordinator met with the staff from a local assisted living facility who will lead a drumming program.  She also noted she met with the gadgets leader and travel club coordinator and she and the Outreach Coordinator met with the new VNA nurse assigned to the Ask a Nurse Program.

The Director reported she, the van drivers and the Outreach Coordinator met for their monthly meeting.  They are working on increasing the ridership by adjusting the schedule and marketing.

The Director thanked the DPW staff who did several repairs to the building and noted the local audio-visual company completed the update on the equipment and now have a wireless microphone for meeting room one.  She also thanked the Friends of the Seniors for purchasing an office chair.

The Director attended several meetings:  Department Head, Staff, Parkinson’s Support Network of Cape Cod Board of Directors, Mashpee Cultural Council, COAST and Mashpee Cares She and the Outreach Coordinator met with the Human Services Director and Police Domestic Violence Specialist.

The Director and Volunteer Coordinator conducted a training for volunteers on policies and procedures and met with the volunteer who is assisting with the policy and procedure manual.

The Director conducted the annual evaluation of the Mature Worker receptionist.

The Director noted she trained the principal clerk to assist with the budget process, worked on preparing for the annual Council on Aging budget and completed the paperwork for the Senior Property Tax Work Off Program.

Her goals are to complete annual operating budget request for FY 2017 which she has submitted, begin reviewing applications for the annual Property Tax Work Off Program beginning October 1 and plan with the Activity Coordinator new activities for January and February 2016.

Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Director’s Report, seconded by Ginny McIntyre.  Vote unanimous 5-0

Treasurer Report

The Director distributed the Budget Report and briefly reviewed the figures with the members.

Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Ginny McIntyre.  Vote unanimous 5-0

Outreach Coordinator Report

In the absence of Darlene Perkins, Outreach Coordinator, the Director distributed the Outreach Coordinator Report for September.

The Director reviewed the report and highlighted the home visits, office appointments and telephone calls.  The brown bag program had 24 participants with 5 volunteers helping.  The Outreach Coordinator is meeting monthly with volunteers.  Eight Mashpee residents turned 90+ and received flowers.  She is training a volunteer on fuel assistance.

The Outreach Coordinator attended several meetings:  Hoarding Task Force, Elder Services Board of Directors and Executive Committee, Outreach Coordinators meeting and she met with the post master on the sticker program.

The Outreach Coordinator’s goals are planning holiday gift giving, implementing Mail Box Sticker program and increasing number of brown bag participants.

Motion:  Ernie Cornelssen moved to accept the Outreach Coordinator’s Report, seconded by Marijo Gorney, vote unanimous 5-0

Volunteer Coordinator Report

The Director distributed the Volunteer Coordinator Report for the month of September.  She highlighted they have been planning a small campaign to recruit volunteers.  The volunteer training on policies was held on September 16.  Many are signing up for the Emergency Preparedness Program.  A workshop will be held on November 4 for volunteers who drive people to doctors’ appointments.

Motion:  Jack Jordan moved to accept the Volunteer Coordinator’s Report, seconded by Jean Noussee.  Vote unanimous 5-0

Activity Coordinator Report

The Director distributed the Activity Coordinator Report and highlighted several programs:  pottery classes, garden contest, Pizza party, writing group, Ask a Pharmacist, sketching group,and the Mashpee Photo club.  She also noted the health fair had a very good turnout.  

Motion:  Ernie Cornelssen moved to accept the Activity Coordinator Report, seconded by Marijo Gorney.  Vote unanimous 5-0

New Business

The Director distributed a copy of an article that appeared in the Cape Cod Times “Lawmakers Urged to Boost Elder Services” and briefly discussed it with the members which dealt with mental health services for seniors.

Independence House and Hope Health who deals with Alzheimer’s Program and Hospice Services on Cape Cod received a million dollar grant.  This will allow both agencies to expand their work.  The Director asked if one of the members would help her and Darlene craft a letter that would request some services that Mashpee seniors might be eligible for.  Ernie volunteered to help with the letter.

The Director noted she attended the MCOA workshops in Sturbridge.
